More than a year has passed since the previous administration resigned in the aftermath of the deadly Beirut port explosion. Najib Mikati has been re-elected as Prime Minister, a position he has held twice.
His appointment, combined with the formation of a new cabinet, brings an end to months of political gridlock. It comes at a time when Lebanon is dealing with some of the most serious domestic issues in its history. Since then-Prime Minister Hassan Diab resigned days after a massive blast on the 4th of August last year destroyed Beirut port and the surrounding area, Lebanon has been without a properly functioning government.
